Saturday morning started out early as usual with seven o'clock karate class in Auburn. We had a good turnout but my seniors were not there so it was my class. We warmed up doing basic moves then went into kata, forms of basic moves. Kata actually came first and was all the karateka used to practice. It wasn't until recent times they broke out the moves and practiced them separately. From there I concentrated on Kwanku, a kata that dates way back. It has a lot of great moves so I picked one to practice some torite, hand releases, and nagewasa, throws. I picked shihonage, four direction throw, named for facing all four directions of the compass as you spin around making a full circle with the uke's hand under control before facing back to the original direction, now behind the uke with his arm bent over his shoulder, at which point the uke would be taken to the ground and pinned, a moment I like to say, "Now we talk?"
After class we met at Starbucks, had a good chat, then went our separate ways…...more later..
