0722, Mon, 050911. We got out of Puerto Balandra with all its winds and are now around the corner to the south in Caleta Lobos (lobo for wolf). The wind blew last night but it was a lot more calm than at Balandra. I think Sue came up with the answer to that one, it is just a wind prone area.
Sue had a visitor for mother's day. A little black bird adopted us. He came in looking a little beat and didn't flinch as we approached. He only got skittish when you got within less than a foot of him. Sue put out a little measuring cup with water and a chunk of pancake. He loved it, hanging around the boat for a couple of hours, eating and drinking, and standing at the back door trying to get in. The pooping finally got to Sue so she gave him his walking (Flying?) papers.
While all this was going on we had other entertainment in the anchorage. The day before we had a boat load of guys (gringos) who were having way too much fun at the expense of the others. They were aboard one of these big motor yachts with all the toys. The jet skis ran continually, at frightening speeds, through the anchorage. We were off to the side a bit from their regular run but a couple of the sail boats were buzzed all day long. Add to that the eighteen foot tender with a half dozen guys hooting and hollering while chasing the jet skis and you have a mix for trouble. Well, other than the annoyance to the rest of the boats there were no mishaps all day. Of course that night the wind kicked up and the boat next to them gave us an up date in the morning. About one in the morning they started to drag and had anchored on the wrong side of the anchorage so were faced with hitting the rock wall. It was reported that all heck broke out with yelling while they got underway to make a move. They made it across the bay to the spot marked by a buoy showing where the reef starts. Yep, we woke this morning to a sight you just never want to see. The tail end of the boat was a couple of feet out of the water high on the reef. We were later told that both props were lodged into the rocks and would probably not get out on the next high tide, maybe the following tide will do it.
Before leaving the anchorage our little black bird came back and was all over the cockpit and hopping around the boat trying to get in the open hatches. Once again he was shooed away but until we started the boat he wasn't leaving. Once underway, he left us, whew, I thought we were going to have another pet aboard. Craig and Bruce on the catamaran Gato Go followed us to Caleta Lobos and came by to visit. We mentioned the black bird and they laughed. They knew just who we were talking about. Apparently this little guy is the freeloader of the anchorage. He spent time on their boat walking all throughout, even downstairs. Quite funny.
To finish the day we took in a movie. Playing now is a TV series called Glee. Good entertainment. Glee club at the local high school is at the bottom rung of the social chain and one of the teachers is trying to turn that around. When I was in high school "Choir", as we called it, was the in thing to do. Boy's practice was sixth period, right after lunch, the last period of the day unless you elected to take another class for seventh period. Girls practice was fifth period, just before lunch, so when the instructor needed a practice for the entire group together he would have us practice during lunch. Well, if you were smart enough to not take a seventh period elective you were out for the rest of the day right after the practice. Pretty kewl, huh? Looking back on it, I wonder if the teacher had that in mind to make it a little bonus to get the guys to sign up for class. If so, pretty smart on his part.....more later..
