We headed into the beach yesterday. Finding lots of shells, most of them very rounded along their edges from rolling back and forth in the surf, we headed for the dry land of the inner island. What a dry area. Plants that are able to grow look dead although they will sprout a bright red flower from their dead branches. We hiked across a flat area to a trail that lead up to the ridge of the far side if the island with a view of the ocean looking back at Espiritu Santo to the south and Isla San Jose to the northeast. We followed the ridge with birds soaring below us and little lizards scurrying off at the very last second. The water was a beautiful emerald green along the shore and so clear, showing off the rocks on the bottom. The ridge trail lead us around and down back to the flat area that creates an isthmus between the north and south side of the island. We walked the shore of the far side and then headed across the isthmus heading back to our side. Along the way we found rectangular holes dug into the ground filled with salt. There used to be salt ponds all around the area, now mostly deserted, for salting the fish before they had refrigeration. The flat area was just as dry looking as everything else but once in awhile we would find a little water, amazing to see with all the dryness around.
Our neighbor invited us over for a get together on their boat, Dave and Caroline of Aztec. Dave mentioned that he had invited Santosha as well. Sue went to enter names into our book and found we had met Patrick and Tami with son Jack of Santosha in Tenacatita. We had a fun time chatting away and even got a visit from another couple (sorry I didn't get their names) from Second Kiss. They were out for a dinghy ride and when we waved to them they came over for a chat. The guy had a great looking hat made from palm fronds that looked like a pith helmet. He had a badge on the front in the shape of a star that we found was a badge he had obtained in Trinidad. He was a former fireman and the badge was from the local fire department. That was pretty kewl.
Movie time, Denzel Washington in Fallen. A bit strange, the devil could live in humans and change from one human to the next through touch. Denzel had to find a way to finish the devil off, strange……more later..
