0715, Wed, 052411. What a nice night, very calm.
Getting an early start right after our morning routine, we left Ensenada El Cardonal behind and thus Isla Partida and Bahia La Paz. We were in new waters for Neos, heading north. It wasn't a long trip, simply 21 miles north west, with the winds at our back it was a good push at about fifteen knots. Once again we sailed along with just the jib at just under five knots. We knew that wouldn't last all day so about mid trip I went below and started to pulling out the drifter. We tried to think back to the last use of this sail. I remember trying it out once and not being able to get her up but the actually use was a couple of years ago sailing across the bay at Bocas Del Toro, Panama, on the Caribbean side.
It takes quite a bit of set up to get it going but when the time came to set her free it was a thing of beauty. This is one of those big sails that ride out over the front of the boat, although ours is not colorful it is nice to see. The wind had died to a nice steady five knots and we were still moving at about 3.5 knots. A beautiful day to be on the waters.
We saw plenty of wild life along the way. We have named our little friends Popcorn Rays. These are little sting rays, about a foot across, that will jump in groups. They come out of the water and hover for a split second to align themselves for re-entry and make a splat as they belly flop on the surface. This gets your attention when you hear all the popping as a dozen or more of these guys get going.
Eric will be happy to hear, we have been dragging the lures through the water with no luck in catching anything more than a bunch of seaweed. We have overheard others in the area saying the area is fished out but it should get better as we get away from La Paz. We shall see.
The real highlight of the trip was a little seal that appeared along our starboard stern. He kept up with us without a problem. Then he would duck down and appear on the other side of the boat. It was obvious he was looking for waves to surf. He would pick up a wave and ride. You could see his body in the wave with his little face poking out of the face of the wave. Very cute.
We are now in Isla San Francisco in a bay that makes a complete half moon over about a half mile with a beach running along the entire shore. At the south tip it makes a little hook with a small lighthouse at its tip. We came in to find three other boats and by the time evening arrived we had at least six of us with plenty of room for all.
Almost like watching a TV series. Our movie time was spent on yet one more movie about the life of Queen Elizabeth called "Elizabeth". It covered the same time span as the movie the night before ("Elizabeth I) but some of the story was different. Interesting to see, leaving you wondering what the true story was. History has a way of being warped by those who write it……more later..
