0725, Fri, 050412.     Puerto Escondido.     The hidden port.  This is a bay capable of holding over a hundred boats that is surrounded by mountains and has only a narrow channel to access the area.  There are a couple of low areas known as the windows that were filled in between the mountains looking out to the north years and years ago by the French.  This completes the closed in bay.  Back in the eighties someone tried to make a community here at the southern end but only got as far as putting in the roads, curbs, and channels for boat access to the lots, before they quit.  I'm surprised someone hasn't come along in recent times and finished it off although the underground work would probably have to be redone by now.  We are here for the Loreto Fest (that takes place in Escondido).

We came in from around the corner first thing in the morning.  There is an office that is in charge of renting out the buoys so we were trying to contact them before we entered the bay, no such luck.  They don't answer until they see you, then it is questionable if they will answer.  We checked in and waited.  Finally Sue got it figured out what the delay was all about.  We told them Eagle had made the reservations so they were trying to get us on a buoy near them.  That really didn't matter to us so we finally got our buoy number and went on a hunt.  The buoys are about the size of a basketball half submerged with a number on them that is only visible when you are right on top of it, kind of like an Easter egg hunt.  Luckily we didn't have a whisper of wind, so wandering among the boats was easy.  We wandered and wandered.  Finally our choices were running low and I spotted it, the one  over along the edge with the sea gull sitting on top, of course.  Sure enough that was it.  We circled as Sue brought us right in on target.

We were signed up by Tom and Jeanie on Eagle for a shift working the bar from 1200-1400.  Once there we found out it was set-up-day so working the bar meant setting it up.  Wow, it felt like I was back at Lions Club.  The Mexican beer company, Modelo, had sent along the equipment as well as the quarter barrels of beer.  There was a tub to ice the small kegs and a jockey box.  This is an ice chest like you would take camping except it is full of coils.  The beer flows from the keg into the coils that get packed in ice, then to the spigot.  All the o rings running the spigot were dried out looking like hard plastic and falling apart.  Tom and I took the thing apart a dozen times trying to work out the problem.  Someone scrounged up some tools that didn't really fit but worked just the same and we hunted down all the leaks.  One of the guys ran over to the boat yard and got some o rings there to save the day.  Of course the beer was leaking everywhere during the operation so we were all busy trying to stay ahead of the cups of beer that were filling.  I think we worked on that project for a couple of hours.  Then there were some other set up items, put out some tables and chairs, arrange for recycle garbage bags.  We finally pooped out so Sue and I headed back to Neos.

The event kicked off with a pot luck dinner around 1630 followed by music.  All the boats were asked to bring a couple of songs.  These were compiled to make the music, quite a good collection.  Only problem with the music was the volume.  They kept turning it up until I think it could have been heard twenty miles away.  My goodness, are these people that deaf?  I finally had to go down wind, behind the speakers for some relief.

We were hanging around for the finale of the day, a puppet show put on by one of the cruisers that was billed as the adult show.  The name of the event was the Roy Orbishark show.  It got a bit silly with Roy Orbison music played with puppets acting out the songs.  The lead singer of course was a shark with such greats as Elvis and Ray (played by a sting ray) Charles.  For some reason they passed out little balls the size of ping pong balls with one of the puppets holding a target for all to throw the balls at.  I'm not sure of the purpose but it turned into a real mess with balls flying everywhere, guess that was the finale, ha.

We snuck in a couple of late Sopranos before heading off to an absolutely flat calm quiet night….more later..
