0710, Tue, 051711. Another great morning. We were going to move to a different cove but the guy on the boat next to us had told us how beautiful the reef was along the shoreline. We wanted to add to the few scallops we had so we decided we would stick around for another day and do some snorkeling. Sue stayed aboard reading, and out of the cold water, while Jim and I went for a dive. We found a few scallops clinging to the rocks but it was pretty well picked over already. Jim pointed down to the first scallop of the day and I watched as he dove down about eight feet to retrieve it. When he started to twist the scallop loose he was greeted by a friend, a little morey eel. The eel scooted out of his hiding spot in the rock and went about three feet. He was in plain sight there but didn't move at all. He must have thought as long as he didn't move then we couldn't see him. We found about five more scallops and then hopped in the dinghy to explore the bottom. Jim hung over the side of the boat looking through the viewing box, a tool we keep in the dink just for such occasions. It is a box with a piece of lexan across the bottom. When dipped into the surface of the water it is like a mini glass bottom boat. We putted along the shore finding lots of growth on the rocks, a few small fish, a small stingray, and a little skate (a head like a stingray with a tail like a fish).
Back on board we hung out for the rest of the day watching as our neighbor left us the anchorage to ourselves and later another came in for a few hours.
We played that lousy card game several times. I'm on a real losing streak. I was coming in for a win one round and bombed on the last couple of hands. Oh well.
It was a beautiful evening so we sat out back and enjoyed the full moon coming up over the mountain and reflecting on the little ripples in the water. As we were talking I thought I heard something let out a low howl from shore. Maybe there is something to the name of this cove, Coleta Lobos. Lobos means wolf……more later..
