0658, Mon, 061311. We have made it up the eastern seaboard of Isla Carmen and around Punta Perico as well as Punta Lobos that establish the farthest points north on the island. Just about dead center on the northern part of the island is a bay that is called Puerto de la Lancha. This was the spot they used to let off the workers so they could hike the five miles across the island to the other side and work the salt ponds at Bahia Salinas. We passed a few dolphins along the way but they were not interested in playing with Neos. As we approached (or they approached us) they simply dove below the boat and came up way out back. We were headed to a very small cove called El Refugio or V-Cove since it is shaped in a "V". It had a big motor yacht in it so we passed on to the next cove. Once again we are the only boat here outside of an occasional fishing boat passing by. We got a little breeze, maybe ten knots tops, in the afternoon, but it came through the valley in the island and gave us a few nice puffs of wind now and then. With a sandy bottom and no fetch it was quite comfortable in our little spot.
We have played cards the last couple of afternoons and the day before I walked away with a slaughter in Baja Rummy, but the luck with the cards didn't hold out. I was behind a bit yesterday so I went for four straights, a rare move, and almost got it back. Oh well, the luck won't be wasted on some silly card game.
We watched In the Name of the Father with Daniel Day-Lewis. True story about an Irishman framed for a bombing in England. He was framed along with three others as well as his father, aunt, and two nephews. They spent about fifteen years in jail before getting out. A lawyer found a secret file by mishap hidden in the police files that had a note "Not to be seen by defense". It was the proof of the innocence but never brought to light because the police wanted to look good for bringing a quick end to the bombing. Are these police officers so stupid to leave a file like that in the records? Apparently so. This is a good movie depicting the strife between the English and the Irish, a dispute that has been going on for the last eight hundred years…..more later..
