0723, Tue, 061411. We are now in Puerto Ballandra. Not the bay down the coast with the same name. This is our first time here. We have made our complete circle of the island, well almost all the way around since it would make much sense to go back to a place we have already visited. The charts really are off and very inaccurate for this area so we do a lot of navigation by eye. The guide book talked about someone reporting a rock somewhere to the northwest of Punta Tintorera, about a mile out, so we had to make a big detour in that area since we didn't know just where it was located. Just after avoiding the rock off of Isla Cholla we were rock free and ready to head in to Puerto Ballandra. This is a little bay on the northwestern coast of Isla Carmen, about ten miles across the channel to Loreto. Loreto itself doesn't have a closed anchorage so I thought there would be a crowd in this little bay waiting to visit or coming back from town. Upon entering the bay we found that not only were there no boats, but the fishing village noted in the guide book was not there. We had the place all to ourselves. With great protection the water is very clear and flat so it wasn't long until we were in the water and enjoying ourselves. The afternoon was so nice, I don't think I could have designed a day with nicer weather. Every paradise has its bad points, this one being no-see-ums. As the evening came around they came hunting. I felt a few while finishing up my chapter out on the back deck and then while we were watching the movie I was attacked. We lit a coil to fend them off, enjoyed our movie and then once again they came hunting, this time finding Sue. She had to get up during the night and light another coil.
Getting emails yesterday, we got a message from our old friends from Second Wind. They informed us that Janet and Russ were getting close to where we are. They are the couple (cruisers) who ran the place we stayed while in the Rio Dulce several years ago. They are back to cruising and have just left the mainland making the crossing to the Baja. We hope to catch up with them soon.
We survived the bugs (not a big deal) and enjoyed our movie. We will be on a James Bond kick for awhile. Last night's was with Roger Moore, A View of a Kill. I hadn't seen this one so enjoyed the typical James Bond style. They ran around the San Francisco area a bit making it fun to recognize some of the area…..more later..
