It was a great day to go exploring. The breeze was absolutely still so the water was like glass. As we scooted along in water two feet deep we saw little white things that stood about two to three inches straight out of the sand. I stopped to get a better look but really couldn't tell what they were. Possibilities? We have seen locals diving for something, we think they may be clams. There is also a small fish that lives in a hole on the bottom waiting for food to come by. Something else…
I'm in trouble for not mentioning the super job Sue did of cleaning both engine compartments. I'm not built for the maneuvering it takes to get down to the bottom and get the floor clean. She is quite the trooper for doing that job and I am most appreciative of the clean engine room. Thanks to you Sue!
On with our venture. We headed over to the cliff along the shore and could see twenty feet to the bottom. We watched as small skates glided by, schools of fish, and much more. We dropped the hook and donned the snorkel gear to jump in. The skates were visible in the sand only by the circle and two eye dots in the surface. There were lots of them. Sue called over and asked what the heck was that? I didn't see anything so she got closer, pointing. Finally I saw it. A rock fish. These guys are not friends of the sea. I believe they can be poisonous. I told Sue to back away and then once we were away I told her what it was. This is only the second one I have ever seen but they look just like the bottom. If they don't move, the only way to tell where they are is by seeing their eyes. They blend in real well. On down the line we came across an entire field of little black fish. These guys aren't more than an inch and a half across. They are the shape of an angel fish and are pretty much black all over, although, as you float along watching, you start to see the subtlety of dark blues and dark purples. These guys, although very small, will stake out a small area and hang out there. As anything comes along they will jump out and get right in the face of the other fish. The territory is about six inches in size and is quite a show to watch.
Up from there we headed across the bay to one of the spires that barely breaks the surface of the water. Again the surface was just like glass and there were lots of fish. I cut the engine and got out the paddle so we could watch the show. The spire widens out quite a bit once under the surface, a place to stay clear of in the big boat.
From there, we dinked around the other side of the bay completing an entire circle.
The rest of the day was just for fun. We jumped in for a swim now and then, read our books, and played Boggle.
Evening time which means movie time. This one was The Good German, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and whatshisname, the guy from Spider Man. Done in black and white with clips of actual WWII scenes. The story was a bit slow but interesting…..more later..
