0718, Sun, 012212. La Paz. We had an interesting day, but first off I tackled the leaky water filter. I thought I was going to have to get some new parts but once the filter was removed and all the little fittings around it I found I could remedy the problem with some Teflon tape. It looked like the previous taping job had worn out over the past five or six years and simply needed a redo. I got the equipment all put back together and it is working perfectly. Make my day.
Just after midday we headed into the marina to meet with Bert and Petra. They had invited us to their place in the country for a visit. When Bert arrived he had another couple with him, Jerry and Sky. They were also along for the visit and have known Bert and Petra for some time. Getting to know Jerry and Sky, it turned out they were visiting here from Northern California and once that was narrowed down it became known they live just off Mc Courtney Road in Grass Valley, less than fifty miles from where we used to live in Meadow Vista. Further conversation later lead to finding other similarities, Sky being born a month after two of us, and just south of where I was born in the San Francisco East Bay. It is a small world.
Bert and Petra have a place out of town in a little subdivision. The roads are dirt (not a problem around here where it rarely rains) and are a five minute walk to the shore. It was fun to see another part of the countryside we hadn't ever been too. We had a great talk over a fantastic lunch. Bert and Petra had put together a meal of potatoes and cooked cabbage with a meat roll, we were told was typical German. The meat was sliced very thin and wrapped as if it were a burrito around a filling of rice and other goodies, then the entire dish was covered in a yummy gravy. With a glass of wine and a great (European, meaning strong) coffee after, I was quite happy. Sue had made some brownies that were served along with a scoop of ice cream, something that is always cherished by us cruisers.
Jerry had his camera at his side being a professional photographer. It sounds like he has been all over the world taking photographs. Sky left home early in life and spent some time in the Haight Ashbury district in SF then lived on the beach in Oahu for twelve years. Petra is into self consciousness and Bert has a varied background in computers with his main interest in Physics. A very interesting group with some fun conversations. To top off the guests there was a little schnauzer that was a year old and full of life. Perfect for getting that dog fix.
We spent the afternoon there and enjoyed the beginning of the sunset with a view of the mountains behind La Paz as they lit up from the setting sun.
Bert gave us all a ride back into town and dropped us off at Marina De La Paz. From there we hopped in the dinghy and stopped by Rock N Roll on our way out. Russ and Janet had just finished their week with visitors and had spent the day driving them back down to Cabo San Jose for flights home. They had just gotten back about an hour before we arrived so we spent just enough time to catch up on stories and head out to Neos.
The weather had been perfect all day, no wind and temperature wise quite comfortable, but the overcast skies and lack of wind meant we didn't get our allotment of power from mother nature. It was one of those rare occasions we had to drag out the generator and energize those batteries a bit before calling it a day. I really don't remember the last time we have had to do that. Of course we didn't miss our movie time before snoozing out, but those poor souls aren't any better off. They just keep making things worse. Let's hope for a turn around before the end of the season
...more later..
